What an unforgettable journey we had into the heart of ocean conservation in Bali, Indonesia! In October 2023, we hosted our first international Inspire Ocean event, at the stunning COMO Uma Canggu. The event offered an immersive experience that celebrated the beauty and significance of our oceans.

We Embarked on a captivating Storytelling workshop
People of all ages came together to attend our Coral Restoration Workshop, closing the evening with our ‘Stories over Supper’ with our Indonesian community of change makers.
We were inspired by renowned ocean conservationists, scientists, and community leaders across Indonesia who are making waves, as they shared their invaluable experiences, knowledge, and success stories related to ocean conservation in Indonesia.

Joseph Recycling - A Young Changemaker
Joseph is a remarkable young changemaker with a heart of gold. He embarked on his own recycling project with a clear and noble mission: to clean up Bali, provide job opportunities for locals, and support children's education. This inspiring journey began about seven months ago when Joseph observed his friends collecting rubbish and selling it at the dump to buy food for their families.

Taking matters into his own hands, Joseph started selling recyclables and used the earnings to purchase snacks for his friends. His story embodies the power of youthful compassion and the impact that one person, regardless of age, can have on their community. Joseph's dedication to making a positive change serves as a shining example for all of us.
The Dolphin Project - Champions for Dolphin Welfare
The Dolphin Project stands as a beacon of hope for the welfare of dolphins, particularly in the Umah Lumba Rehabilitation, Release, and Retirement Center in Banyuwedang Bay, West Bali, Indonesia. This center is not only unique but also groundbreaking, as it serves as the first and only permanent facility dedicated to the rehabilitation, release, and retirement of formerly performing dolphins.

This incredible initiative took shape in September 2019, through the collaboration of BKSDA Bali Forestry Department and the Ministry of Forestry. Working hand in hand with local partners, including the Jakarta Animal Aid Network for manpower and the Dolphin Project for financial support and supervision, the Umah Lumba Center came into existence. The name "Umah Lumba," meaning "dolphin house" in Balinese, encapsulates the essence of this remarkable center.
The Dolphin Project embodies the spirit of compassion and dedication to ensuring the well-being of these magnificent marine creatures. Their commitment to the rehabilitation, release, and retirement of formerly performing dolphins is a testament to the positive change that can be achieved through collective efforts and unwavering dedication.
Living Seas — Ocean Stewardship
Leon, from Living Seas in Padangbai, East Bali, is a passionate advocate for marine conservation. Living Seas Asia is a dedicated marine conservation company that has been working tirelessly since 2008 to rebuild and restore healthy coral reefs. Their mission is not just urgent; it's crucial to rebalance our oceans and alleviate the impact on our climate.

Through unwavering commitment and the collaboration of local communities and generous supporters, Living Seas Asia has made significant strides in their conservation efforts. They firmly believe that, by working together, they can create meaningful change within our lifetime to ensure a sustainable future for all.
Caring for the environment is at the heart of Living Seas' mission, with over a decade of experience in coral conservation and the successful implementation of four coral projects that have seen marine life returning to the reefs. Their latest ambitious endeavor is to restore five hectares of corals in Padangbai, East Bali, marking another significant step in their ongoing commitment to marine conservation. Leon's dedication to protecting our oceans serves as an inspiration for us all.
Mars Sustainable Solutions - The Guardians of Reef Restoration Stewardship
Mars Sustainable Solutions (MSS) is an embodiment of hope and a powerful force in restoring the life beneath the waves. For decades, the seafloor of Salisi' Besar, a reef off the coast of Sulawesi in Indonesia, lay silent and lifeless, victim to destructive blast fishing. In 2019, MSS, in collaboration with the MARS team, embarked on a remarkable journey that saw the transformation of a 50-meter reef into a beacon of "H-O-P-E.

Driven by a profound commitment to environmental rejuvenation, MSS has partnered with local communities in Indonesia to rebuild an astonishing 40,000 square meters of reef in one of the planet's most biodiverse marine environments. Their innovative MARRS (Mars Assisted Reef Restoration System) method is nothing short of a miracle. It has the power to turn degraded, lifeless rubble fields into thriving coral ecosystems within just a few short years.
Having honed their expertise in central Indonesia, MSS now proudly extends their knowledge to train marine park managers, conservation practitioners, tourism operators, and NGOs worldwide. Through their 'hub and spoke' model, they are sowing the seeds for a global network of competent reef builders. This network promises to benefit countless more reefs than they could restore alone, leaving an indelible mark on the world's underwater wonders.
Mars Sustainable Solutions stands as a testament to the incredible resilience and potential of our oceans when passionate guardians commit to their restoration and preservation.
Empower Ocean - Ecosystem resilience through female empowerment
An initiative powered by Women in Ocean Science and developed in collaboration with local stakeholders, EMPOWER OCEAN is a female empowerment and capacity building initiative conceptualised to facilitate ocean guardianship by local women from ocean-dependent coral reef communities within the Indo-Pacific. Creating an intersectional conservation and female empowerment model in Maldives or Indonesia, Empower Ocean unites SDG’s 5 and 14 with the aim to increase long-term ecosystem resilience through prioritising gender equity in marine resource management.

As an Open Water Scuba Instructor and marine biologist, Mads works alongside her local collaborators to train women in marine conservation and scuba diving, pioneering a “closed-loop” empowerment model, whereby culturally-integrated, generational change is implemented through training super-trainers within the community. Mads aims not only to support women in not only finding confidence, but in sustaining it to continually engage in leadership, decision-making and management roles for the ocean within their communities.
OCL's first International Inspire Ocean Event proved to be an outstanding success, and we are thrilled about the possibilities that lie ahead. As we continue our mission to connect, inspire, and take action for our oceans, we are excited to announce that we're setting sail for more adventures in ocean communities around the world.
