Exploring Ocean Innovation at the Blue Earth Summit
Blue Earth is the only purpose-driven summit for individuals in business who draw inspiration from the great outdoors. Blue Earth is fundamentally pro-business, holding the belief that business can serve as a positive force and an advocate for the natural world.
The summit intentionally operates across industries and sectors, uniting various domains, deconstructing echo chambers, and dismantling silos.
Blue Earth adopts a solutions-focused and action-oriented approach. Its content defines clear and tangible solutions to shift the needle toward more regenerative business practices. The event is designed to be inclusive for all businesses, regardless of where they are on their environmental journey. This inclusivity means that the event features companies at various stages of their sustainability efforts, all of whom are welcome.
Collectively, Blue Earth and its participants are on a mission to inspire improved business practices and, ultimately, to transform the way people live and work.
"The ocean: from awareness to action" was another captivating talk. DEFRA's comprehensive survey of people's perceptions of the ocean was eye-opening, showcasing that ocean optimism has the potential to thrive. The panel of innovators in the ocean space underscored the importance of converting awareness into action. These amazing individuals shared their stories of dedication and innovation, inspiring all of us to take meaningful steps towards ocean conservation.
During the summit, I had the delightful surprise of bumping into two of our existing ocean storytellers. It was a great opportunity to catch up and exchange insights on the latest developments in the world of ocean storytelling.
"Coastal restoration: protecting the ocean so it can protect us" highlighted the challenges faced by coastal communities around the UK. Declining fish landings, collapsed fisheries, and dwindling employment due to the decline in nature and ocean health were critical issues discussed. However, the session also showcased the resilience and determination of certain UK communities. Through low-impact fishing and fishing tourism, seagrass restoration, and innovative initiatives like 3D ocean farming with seaweed, these communities are leading the way in restoring our coastal ecosystems.
Imogen Napper's talk on "Plastic Detective" was a particular highlight for me. Learning about the pervasive issue of microplastics, and the surprising fact that they are even found in space, was both concerning and motivating. Imogen's work exemplified the importance of scientific research in tackling ocean pollution and the urgent need for action to reduce plastic waste.
Moreover, I had the pleasure of making new connections with future storytellers for Ocean Culture Life. These connections are poised to enrich our platform with fresh perspectives and inspiring stories, further amplifying the message of ocean conservation to a wider audience. As I reflected on the event, I couldn't help but express my sentiments, saying, "The Blue Earth Summit was a powerful reminder that together, we can create a brighter future for our oceans—one filled with innovation, hope, and sustainable action."
