Michaela Palmer | Student | Water Research Analysts | Oahu, Hawaii
Michaela lives and breathes for the ocean, from working in water resources performing analyses for sustainable development and coastal preservation, and using her school studies to research the use of geospatial analyses to inform shark conservation. In her spare time, the self-proclaimed mermaid spends most of her time in the ocean, using her underwater photography to combat sharks’ negative reputation, and using her platform to inspire and educate others.
What is a typical day like for you?
I work in water resources, helping develop digital products and performing analyses for sustainable development and coastal preservation. I am also pursuing a MS at Johns Hopkins University, where I plan to focus my research on using geospatial analyses to inform shark conservation policies. Other than work and school, I love to free dive and take pictures of sharks in my spare time. I enjoy sharing my photos on social media so others can see the beauty and importance of these animals. By sharing these images, I hope to combat sharks’ negative reputation and inspire others to fight for their protection.
When did you first pick up a camera and start shooting underwater?
I started out using a GoPro 4 years ago. I eventually upgraded to a Sony 1 year ago.
What are the fondest memories from your upbringing that you feel impacted your life choices and lifestyle today?
I have had an ocean obsession since I was a baby. I started scuba diving when I was 13 in Monterey, CA. That was a pivotal movement for me. I ditched the tanks and cold water a couple years ago and fell in love with freediving. As Jacques Cousteau said, "The best way to observe a fish is to become a fish". The ability to feel so natural and intuitive while exploring the ocean was an amazing feeling unlike any other.
What path did you choose after leaving school?
I work full-time while continuing my graduate education.
What do you value most in life?
Time, love, the opportunity to do good in the world.
What brings you the most joy?
Being underwater or with my dog.
Who/what currently inspires you?
Robert Stewart, Sylvia Earle, Jillian Morris-Brake.
What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?
I wish more people would recognize the importance of a healthy environment.
Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?
Sharkwater.
What legacy do you hope to leave?
I want to leave the world better than I found it.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an ocean Storyteller?
It's never too late to pursue your passion. You don't have to be a marine biologist to make an impact in ocean conservation or storytelling.
