Matt Walch | Nurse Anesthetist | Tahiti
Growing up as a surfer on Reunion island, Matt always knew I will end up on a tropical island sooner or later. After a brief time in the military, Matt became a nurse anaesthetist and has been doing so for the last 12 years now, however, he cannot ignore his storytelling abilities and loves being creative in his free time, particularly around the ocean and marine life.
Matt is determined to play an active part in saving our planet and is passionate about preserving a bit of nature and wildlife amidst the growing population.
Who/what currently inspires you?
The ocean is a major inspiration to so many of us, obviously. As photographer, I’d say that people having a different view always fascinate me. To name just a few, Ben Thouard, Ren Mcgann, Darren Jew…
What is a typical day like for you?
In the water, editing or working as a nurse anaesthetist.
When did you first pick up a camera and start shooting underwater?
About three years ago… when I was able to swim with sharks on a daily basis, and witnessed some epic swell at Teahupoo
What do you value most in life?
Integrity. I try to always stay true to myself. Not always well received!
What brings you the most joy?
Being in the water, either with whales or sharks! And seeing an image come to life as I’m editing it.
What would you most like to change in the world/environment today?
Nowadays, it is trendy to say that you care about the environment, but few people actually do anything in that sense. I wish it would change. We’ll soon be 10 billion on earth, and we will need to do something if we wish to preserve a bit of nature and wildlife.
Are there any books/documentaries that have guided your thinking?
No specific names come to my mind, but as a rule of thumb, I tend to avoid emotional / propaganda stuff and read scientific papers instead.
What legacy do you hope to leave?
I’m not sure I will be leaving a legacy… to me, I’m just a random guy in love with the ocean. But if it ever happens, Maybe that fascination… when you fall in love with something, it becomes obvious and instinctive to protect it. I’d be happy if people take that from what I do.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to follow their dreams as an ocean Storyteller?
Don’t think too much… if you have that urge inside you, you already have most of the answers you need. Just maybe don’t drop your day work without a solid plan! You don’t need to be starving to be an artist! ;)
